Transmission and Inactivation of
SARS-CoV-2 - Eike Steinman, PhD
Professor Eike Steinmann discusses the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the
virus which causes COVID-19. Both alcohol and soap can deactivate the
virus. Soap can be used in home settings. Soap both mechanically removes
the virus and deactivates the virus's protein lipid capsule. The major
mode of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is by aerosolization. Transmission by
surfaces is also possible and experimentally the virus has been shown to
be infectious on plastic and stainless-steel surfaces for up to three
days. However, the touch transfer assay, a more realistic method of
studying viral infectivity, was not able to demonstrate transfer of an
infectious virus when it had dried on surfaces. It is felt that surfaces
are not a major method of transmission with SARS-CoV-2. Health Watch
